Before writing the book “Chief Sustainability Officers at Work”, Chrissa Pagitsas was the first Vice President of ESG at Fannie Mae. She recently sat down with Climate Club to provide advice for Sustainability teams that drew on her own personal experiences as well as those of the Fortune 500 CSO’s she interviewed for her book. 

First and foremost, Chrissa stressed the importance of aligning sustainability to the business. Building allies across an organization is key to hitting your sustainability targets. The way to do that, as Chrissa says, is by “thinking about not only the sustainability goals but also about the business goals. That brings you into the room and allows you to talk to any level of person at your company in order to move the sustainability strategy forward.”

Of course, that’s easy to say and much harder to do, but Chrissa provided practical advice and examples on how she and leading CSO’s have been able to do just that.
